A to Z of Pet Poisons is a slowly ongoing project at Vet In Harness, highlighting the more (and less!) common causes of poisonning and intoxication of pet animals as seen in general practice in the UK. As articles are added they will be indexed here.
- A is for Alcohol
- B is for Barbiturates
- C is for Chocolate
- Coming next - 'D is for Deadly Nightshade'
Please do bear in mind that these articles are provided for general interest only and should not under any circumstances be regarded as a substitute for individual veterinary advice. If your pet has eaten anything at all unusual and you are concerned, it is essential that you seek advice as quickly as possible from your local veterinary surgery.
I hope that these articles are able to highlight some of the potential dangers to pets in our environment, as well as underlining the potential life-threatening nature of some poisoning incidents.
Please take care, and if in any doubt at all, speak with your vet immediately.
It is so sad that chocolate is in the list of poisons... I love it so badly

Nightshade or Belladonna is one people should be on the look out for, it is naturalized in parts of North America so it grows wildly. Dogs like to eat their berries, and chew on their foliage, they are quite poisonous.
